The Wray Family of Glentworth
Talk by Adrian Gray at The Collection
Saturday 23rd November 2019 at 2 pm
The Wrays of Glentworth: Radical Religion in Tudor and Stuart England.
Lord Chief Justice Sir Christopher Wray’s memorial at Glentworth is one
of the treasures of Lincolnshire, but he and his wife also founded a
family that were supporters of radical religion across the country for fifty
years. This is a story of rich and clever people, using their wealth to
promote bright young men into key places – men like John Smyth, the
founder of the Baptists – and their association with people like the
Mayflower Pilgrims.
The cost will be £8 per member and £10 for non-members.
Please send your cheque (made payable to FLMAG), with the attached
slip to Hugh Cooke, 9 Francis Hill Court, Church Lane, Lincoln LN2 1QJ
The Colleyweston Slaters
Talk by Nigel Smith at The Collection
Saturday 12th October 2019 at 2 pm
Nigel Smith is the son of Claude Smith whose building firm reroofed the
Guildhall in London in Colleyweston slates. Subsequently they bought
the business of Stapleton and Son in 1990 which included a disused
slate mine in Colleyweston. The mine was reopened in 2016 and the
company have developed a process for producing slate ‘logs’ on a large
scale. They are currently reroofing Grade 1 listed buildings at King’s
College, Cambridge.
Lunch at The Nightingale Rooms
Tuesday 5th November 12.30 for 1 pm
Our Annual Lunch this year will be at the Nightingale Rooms in
Nettleham Road.
Formerly the Nightingale pub, this has become a very pleasant meeting
place. It has adequate parking behind the building, and is close to the
bus stop.
We hope to have a speaker from the Usher Trust to talk briefly about
their exciting proposals for the Usher Gallery.
